First dates: Great or flat-out awkward

With a new semester comes first impressions, and with first impressions come first dates; a first date can be great or flat-out awkward.

I come from Roswell, Georgia. My first date at 16 was, by far, the most awkward.

First of all, it was a blind date. When I opened my front door, I was surprised to see a 5-foot-6-inch young man standing there with his jaw dropped. I’m 6 feet tall.

I said to myself, “Taylor, just roll with it.” The entire night we barely talked.

The other couples on the gro date found it hilarious and joked about the height difference.

At the end of the date, some of his buddies said to take a picture together in order to never forget how uncomfortable both of us felt that day. Awkward!

Nate Van Roosendaal, a sophomore studying phychology, said that the main components of an awkward first date include having nothing to talk about, and having nothing in common.

“You just realize everything is a miss like, ‘Oh hey, you like sports? I hate sports,’” Van Roosendaal said.

For example, a first date that starts off through the dating app Tinder normally indicates a red flag for awkward first date.

First dates that start off on the wrong foot usually end in the awkward first date pile.

In order to avoid having awkward first dates, consider turning to the internet for resources about tips for dating.

Sources can include professional dating sites such as eharmony.com

Cameron Blakely, a sophomore majoring in general studies, said first dates are especially awkward when your dad sets you .

Blakely’s dad worked at the temple and met a young lady he thought perfect to set his son on a date with.

His dad got her information, but Blakely never called her.

Eventually, he became indebted to his dad, and his dad sent, both Blakely and this young lady, a formal email inviting them to a family dinner.

Blakely was not about to have her meet his whole family on a first date, so he decided to call this mystery girl and ask her out on his own terms.

Blakely proceeded to take the young lady out, but he took her out for ice cream instead.

He wanted to avoid making the first date even more awkward.

“My name is Cameron Blakely, son of the creeper,” Blakely said.
